The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cut $7,774,758.19 in federal diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) grants for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to four Alabama universities last week.
According to doge.gov, DOGE cut grants to Alabama A&M, Auburn University, the University of Alabama and Tuskegee University last week.
DOGE was started at the beginning of President Donald Trump's second term to find taxpayer savings and is headed up by Elon Musk. DOGE estimates that its total national savings through cost-cutting measures amount to $170 billion or $1,055.90 per taxpayer.
According to DOGE, the taxpayer savings from the grant cuts last week include:
- $422,872.72 cut from Auburn University for a STEM program for the Black Belt
- $1,376,986,25 cut from Alabama A&M for increasing minority participation in STEM
- $3,284,993.86 cut from Auburn University for STEM program for students with disabilities
- $67,520.91 cut from a National Science Foundation grant to Tuskegee University
- $1,892,348.45 cut from a grant to the University of Alabama to increase minority participation in STEM
- $730,036 cut from Alabama A&M for another STEM grant
