Members of the Dothan City Commission approved a $110,000 settlement on Tuesday with Stephanie Wingfield, a city employee who filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in 2023.
Wingfield sued the City of Dothan in federal court in March 2023 for racial discrimination, deprivation of due process and a hostile work environment.
The Alabama Court of Civil Appeals reversed a lower court’s initial ruling in December to uphold the City of Dothan's firing of Stephanie Wingfield over her alleged role in a scheme to falsify paperwork in a federal meals program administered by the City of Dothan during the pandemic.
The Court of Civil Appeals wrote that the Dothan Personnel Board’s termination of Wingfield was only based on “hearsay evidence” and should be reversed.
