The Dothan Police Department is investigating a shootout that occurred inside a barbershop at the Wiregrass Commons Mall.

Officers responded just before 4 p.m. after receiving calls of active gunfire in the mall. Mall goers had to shelter in place until officers could successfully evacuate the mall.

Police found one male suffering from a gunshot wound. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment.

In the meantime, police had to conduct three searches because of the mall's size.

Upon investigation, police learned the incident occurred after a group of people entered the barbershop, threatening violence against a person getting a haircut.

The person getting a haircut had a firearm, and after more threats were made, people on both sides of the altercation retrieved firearms.

Several rounds were fired in both directions, leading to one of the people making threats being struck, police said.

“Any time someone is injured by gunfire is a concerning incident,” police stated. “However, the place where this shooting took place was especially concerning. Citizens expect to be safe at places in and around the City of Dothan while shopping with their families.”

“The Dothan Police Department will find those responsible for this chaos and hold them accountable,” police continued. “We want to be clear. There is no measure to how fast we will hold you accountable or how severe the consequences will be for committing acts of violence in this city. “
