The Dothan Police Department arrested a man in a September death investigation and found out more than they expected during the booking process.

Jaquan Smith, 22, was charged with criminally negligent homicide. The charge stemmed from the death of Fatimah Borders, 45, who was hit and killed by an SUV on September 24. Police responded to the scene in the 1200 block of South Park Avenue at 4 a.m. and found Borders lying on the edge of the roadway.

At the time, police said the driver stayed on the scene and was cooperating with investigators. According to court documents, Smith had over the legal limit of alcohol in his blood at the time of the incident.

It wasn't until December 5 that Smith was taken into custody and booked into the Dothan City Jail. During processing, investigators identified the suspect as a male, WDHN reported.
