GUNTERSVILLE — Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones said Friday that a lawsuit filed against his opponent in the gubernatorial race, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), is doomed to fail.
Ken McFeeters, who is running against Tuberville in the Republican primary, filed suit against Tuberville this week, claiming he doesn't meet the residency requirements to run for governor and should be disqualified.
"This specific litigation is not going anywhere. It's premature," Jones said during a meeting in Guntersville with Strong Coffee. "The law in Alabama is pretty clear that the state party and the political parties have total control during the primary. So they filed it prematurely. They filed it in the wrong County. I don't even know if he's got a lawyer that filed it, something like God's Law Firm."
Jones implied that the issue could still pose trouble for Tuberville, who has repeatedly laughed off the accusation.
"We'll see what else gets filed," Jones said. "... We're not planning to do anything about that, but I do think it's a hell of a political issue."
"I think it's real when the Republican Party just completely ignores the Constitution," he continued. "We'll see if the judges do the same thing, but I think it's got legs. But we'll see. For me, it's about the people of the state and following the law."
