U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) was presented with an honorary doctorate Friday by University of South Alabama (USA) president Jo Bonner.

"Congratulations, Senator Britt, or should I say, Dr. Britt," Bonner said. "And as she said to those who couldn't hear in the back, she's a member of the class of 2025, so you've got a pretty famous classmate, graduates."

Britt delivered the commencement address, congratulating students and offering life advice. Britt emphasized the inevitability of failure and reminded students they don't need to have their life plans fully mapped out right now.

"What I have learned is whether it is a misstep, a disappointment, an unexpected event, or rejection, many times that is truly redirection," said Britt. "God's purpose for your life is not always what you planned. But when you're called to do a hard thing, you have a disappointment or a setback, standing back up and walking forward makes all the difference."

In her own life, Britt said she has learned that you don't have to agree with others, but respect is necessary. She said that is how she has learned to make a difference. Britt has worked with U.S. Sens. John Fetterman (D-Penn.), Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) during her time in Washington, D.C.

"Having built relationships that are built on trust and respect allows us to have really tough conversations and move the needle in a positive way for the people that we serve," she said.

Britt encouraged graduates to invest in their communities and to give back.
