Eddie Smith won the election to be the next mayor of Opelika on Tuesday.
Smith has been the Opelika City Council president for 16 years.
Smith received 4,149 votes to Raven Harvis’s 3,156 votes and Herman G. Barnes, III’s 115 votes.
Smith said in a statement after the results were announced, “Thank you Opelika! I am so honored and humbled to be elected as your next Mayor.”
“It is such a blessing to serve this amazing place. Opelika is my home, and I’m excited to get work to make it better for each and every person who lives here!” Smith said.
Longtime Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller is retiring.
