No. 6 Auburn baseball took control from the first pitch on Tuesday night at the Hoover Met, plating nine runs in the opening frame en route to a 14-2 victory over Samford in seven innings.
Auburn barreled 17 hits on the night with seven Tigers recording multiple base hits. Eddie Madrigal led Auburn with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate, belting his first longball of the season.
Eric Guevara and Ethin Bingaman each recorded two-run homers in the first, giving the Tigers three home runs on the night. Auburn has blasted 14 home runs in the last six games.
Meanwhile, the Tigers' pitching staff held Samford to five hits on the night, improving Auburn to a 26-0 mark this season when outhitting its opponent.
Griffin Graves earned his second consecutive midweek start, giving up two runs on a home run in the first. He finished his night with four hits given up in two innings of work. LJ Cormier earned his first college win after relieving Graves in the third. He gave up one hit – a one-out single through the left side – in the fourth, which was the Bulldogs’ final hit of the night.
Abe Chancellor, Christian Chatterton and Marcel Kulick combined for a hitless showing in the fifth through seventh innings.
A pair of two-run blasts in the first put Auburn on the board early, but the Tigers were not done extending their lead. Madrigal tallied an RBI single to second base before an error gave way for two more Auburn runs. Guevara, who homered in the second at-bat of the inning, came around once more and knocked in his third run of the frame with a single to right field. A one-out groundout plated another before the inning was over.
Samford responded in its half of the inning with a one-out blast over the wall in left field to score a pair.
The Tigers added five more runs across the third through fifth innings to push the run-rule threat. Madrigal belted a lead-off home run, and Mason McCraine stayed hot with a double down the line in right to score another in the third.
A bases-loaded walk in the fourth allowed one more to score for Auburn before adding a pair on a Chris Rembert double and a wild pitch in the fifth.
Auburn will return to Plainsman Park this weekend after a four-game road swing. The Tigers host No. 9 Oklahoma in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
