A man accused of murdering his wife is back behind bars just weeks after being released.

WSFA reported Zachary Lee, 34, is charged in the shooting death of his wife, Bethany Lee, in 2025. The shooting occurred at a home on Tallassee Highway. Lee told Elmore County deputies he shot his wife after she shot him.

Investigators said Lee called 911 and refused to go back inside the home to render aid. By the time deputies arrived on the scene, Zachary Lee was unresponsive but was taken to the hospital for treatment.

He was then charged with murder and held without bond. After a hearing, Lee was granted a $1.5 million bond on May 7 and released from jail. The prosecution immediately objected and after a hearing Wednesday, Lee was taken back into custody.

Lee is considered innocent until proven guilty.
