Thousands of folks in northern Elmore County knew and loved Marion “Bebe” McCarter in different ways. Locals who knew Bebe in one capacity may not have known of her other lives — teacher, Sunday School teacher, church organist, Joe’s Fish Camp manager and volunteer.

She died on July 6 at the age of 94, but her influence will continue.

“Bebe” was an Auburn graduate in education and a lifelong leader in the Auburn Alumni Association. War Eagle.

She was a teacher for decades and was the assistant principal of Wetumpka Elementary School.

She was a lifelong member of New Home Baptist Church of Titus, serving as church organist for 40 years and as a Sunday School teacher.

She was a volunteer candy striper at Elmore County Community Hospital, where she cared for the sick.

Only local fishermen and boaters likely knew Bebe was the manager of Joe’s Fish Camp on Lake Jordan, a legacy from her father and a place she held dear.

Don’t take on Bebe in a Bible knowledge contest (called a “Sword Drill”), a Scrabble competition, or a Wheel of Fortune game. Bebe was as spirited as she was wise.

Bebe found great joy in tending her garden, spending time at Lake Jordan, sharing stories with loved ones, and spending time with her grandchildren. In the last chapter of her life, she formed friendships with the dedicated staff and caregivers at the assisted living facility who helped care for her.

In honor of Bebe’s memory, memorial donations can be made to New Home Baptist Church or the Auburn University Alumni Association.

Marion “Bebe” McCarter lived a life of purpose, faith, and service. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she shaped and the love she gave so freely. She was truly a rare jewel and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at New Home Baptist Church of Titus on Thursday, July 10 at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10. Burial will follow in the New Home Baptist Church of Titus Cemetery.
