Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently canceled seven federal leases in Alabama, saving taxpayers $5,269,991.

According to DOGE, the lease cancellations in Alabama included facilities used by the National Labor Relations Board, the Corps of Engineers, the Social Security Administration, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

A spokesperson for DOGE estimated that the department under the Trump administration has saved taxpayers $65 billion nationally.

“Let's balance the budget! DOGE's total estimated savings are $65 billion, which is a combination of fraud detection/deletion, contract/lease cancellations, contract/lease renegotiations, asset sales, grant cancellations, workforce reductions, programmatic changes, and regulatory savings,” the DOGE spokesperson said.

The locations, agencies, and total savings of the canceled federal leases include:

  • Birmingham (National Labor Relations Board) $227,725
  • Mobile (Corps of Engineers, Civil) $3,610,220
  • Anniston (Social Security Administration) $608,457
  • Cullman (Social Security Administration) $512,221
  • Mobile (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) $243,958
  • Gadsden (Social Security Administration) $67,410
  • Jasper (Social Security Administration) $0

UPDATE: Dustin Gautney, spokesman for the US Army Corps of Engineers, told 1819 News after publication, “Not much to speak on regarding the cancelled lease showing on the DOGE site.”

“Understand, the Mobile District is the military real estate office for much of the southeast. That means while the lease agreement may have been initiated from the Mobile District, this maybe a lease contract for a different agency and not in Mobile at all. Additionally, the contract could have been cancelled from the agencies (Navy, Air Force, Army, etc.) side,” Gautney said. “Without more details from the DOGE site (address, contract number, etc.) we are not able to pinpoint what this is referring too. We would have to refer to DOGE to clarify details that they are reporting on their site. I can however, confirm it is not the contract for our new Mobile District Headquarters.”
