Energy Alabama recently hired former Democratic Governor Jim Folsom, Jr. to lobby against legislation that would transition the Public Service Commission from an elected to an appointed body.

Under legislation passed by a House committee recently that has stalled in the full House, Alabama’s three statewide Public Service Commissioners would be appointed by the governor with input from legislative leadership. The Senate version of the bill hasn’t moved since its introduction.

Energy Alabama is a clean energy advocacy nonprofit that has been one of the loudest critics of the legislation, calling it the “Alabama Power Grab.”

Folsom previously served as a Public Service Commissioner, lieutenant governor, and governor.

“Energy Alabama hired former Gov. Jim Folsom for his strong relationships in Montgomery and his ability to speak to legislators about his former service as an elected Public Service Commissioner,” Daniel Tait, executive director of Energy Alabama, told 1819 News on Thursday. “Gov. Folsom adds to our effort to lobby against HB392 and SB268 (the Alabama Power Grab). We will remain vigilant until this bill is finally and fully put to rest.”
