A pair of Etowah County Detention Center deputies ended up behind bars last week, and they're now facing felony charges.

Maya Dudley and Robert Phillips, both of Gadsden, are charged with promoting prison contraband. Dudley is also charged with drug trafficking.

The two were arrested on November 7 after investigators received tips indicating possible contraband.

Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton told 1819 News that Phillips was in possession of a cell phone and Dudley was found with methamphetamine and the stimulant "flakka," which is similar to bath salts.

Horton said he is thankful the items did not make it into the facility.

"Our goal in this is, even when we make mistakes, we have to rid ourselves of it and that's what we do and that's what we did here," Horton said.

Phillips admitted he brought contraband into the facility in exchange for cash, detectives said.

"We will not tolerate this type of behavior from anyone within our ranks," Horton added. "The safety and security of our inmates, deputies, and staff are our top priorities, and we will continue to take every measure necessary to maintain integrity and accountability inside our detention center."

Additional charges are expected.

Dudley and Phillips are considered innocent until proven guilty.
