The Evonik chemical plant in Theodore experienced an incident Saturday after a railcar exploded.

Mobile County Fire and Mobile Fire-Rescue crews, along with multiple other agencies, responded and rendered first aid to those in need. However, no serious injuries were reported.

The company said the explosion occurred when the railcar containing hydrogen peroxide "experienced an overpressure."

"First responders from the onsite fire team, Mobile County Fire, Theodore and Fowl River Volunteer Fire Departments arrived on the scene very quickly, and we appreciate their work in containing the situation," Evonik said in a press release. "We are fully cooperating with local authorities. Evonik cares deeply about safety and investigating the cause of this incident is a top priority."

Evonik produces chemicals for a variety of products worldwide, including additives, adhesives, batteries, paints, foods, cleansers, beauty products, plastics and textiles.

The Theodore plant is Evonik’s largest chemical manufacturing site in North America.
