A Fairhope City Councilman running for re-election is without a campaign website after his page was taken over by Drag Story Hour.
Incumbent candidate Jack Burrell used the website for his 2020 campaign. The URL, JackForFairhope.com, now redirects to DragStoryHour.org.
Burrell said he noticed what he believes was an intentional takeover after he had already recycled many of his signs from the 2020 campaign.
Drag Story Hour is a national non-profit founded in San Francisco in 2015. The web page features men dressed as women and reading books to small children.
Burrell told 1819 News that he believes the takeover is related to recent issues discussed in Fairhope, such as the Fairhope Public Library losing state funding over books placed in the juvenile sections. Burrell made it clear he does not believe his opponent was involved in the hack.
He said it is unfortunate, and he has done all he can to remove the link from his campaign’s Facebook page.
It should be mentioned that Burrell did not plan to continue using his website for the 2025 campaign, although his recycled signs did include the link. Links there are not renewed are available for purchase, so no crime was committed.
