The Fairhope Police Department cordoned off a section of downtown Tuesday night due to a threat to a local business.

Lt. Shane Nolte said the threat was by way of an explosive device.

"Currently, there is no evidence beyond the threat itself; however, officers are adhering to protocol as a precautionary measure," Nolte told 1819 News.

The City received the threat through an online service request form.

Nolte said Fairhope Avenue from Church St to Section Street and De la Mare Avenue are closed.

The City's New Year's Eve celebration, from 6 p.m. until 12:15 a.m., will include bands, kids activities, fireworks and a ball drop.
