FAIRHOPE — When the Fairhope Public Library's board of trustees met on Monday, chairman Randal Wright said she doesn’t think the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) will do what they said they will do.
APLS chairman John Wahl requested a list of reviewed books and the board’s decisions on those books. The request was made last month when the APLS met and considered a vote on reinstating the library’s state funding.
Wright said she was pleased that she was about to voice her opinion on the pausing of funding. The APLS tabled the vote.
“We talked about how our entire board had read the books and we thought about them carefully and then voted,” Wright said. “And we talked about how that board is supposed to be non-partisan and that they’re to come to that table with no agendas in their heads about these things. Anyway, I talked to a long time.”
However, Wright said she didn’t think the members of the state board would read the challenged books.
“Their discussion was they were going to read the books,” Wright added. “I don’t think that’s probably going to happen, but I have heard that they definitely will vote at the November meeting.”
Wright said the Board of Trustees will be in attendance at the November meeting.
The board will not go to an APLS public hearing Tuesday on a proposal to amend state code to classify gender ideology materials as inappropriate for minors.
