The family of one of the two women killed in a 2021 crash is thankful after hearing of a possible plea deal.
Jacob Stephens is charged with two counts of reckless murder and two counts of first-degree assault in connection to the crash.
Hannah Parton and Arlene Velasquez were killed, and five others were injured when investigators said Stephens drove into oncoming traffic on Interstate 565, striking two vehicles.
Sheila Smith told 1819 News that a plea deal is on the table, which would result in Stephens receiving a 30-year sentence. She said while she believes he should get more time than 30 years, she is thankful the painful ordeal will soon end.
The trial is set for Monday. Parton's family plans to be at the Madison County Courthouse.
The family has filed a civil lawsuit against Stephens. That case cannot continue until the criminal case is completed.
Stephens is considered innocent until proven guilty.
