A group of protesters is planning to disrupt services at Church of the Highlands on Sunday over the recent detention of a suspected illegal alien.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Giovanna Martinez on August 5 after she was pulled over by a Leeds police officer for reckless driving. AL(dot)com and other leftist outlets tried to portray her arrest as racial oppression, falsely claiming she was pulled over for going one mph above the speed limit.

The protest is being organized by two far-left groups, Birmingham Indivisible and Alabama 50501. A flyer posted by the groups advertising the protest reads, “Free Giovanna,” and “What would Jesus Do with Immigrants?”
The flyer states that the protest would be held “outside Church of the Highlands” on Grant Mills Road, but to meet at a nearby Shell gas station at 7:30 a.m.

“What Would Jesus Do with Immigrants? He would welcome them,” a post reads on Alabama 50501’s Instagram page. “Bring your voice, your signs, and your solidarity. Let’s show that our community will not be silent.”
The groups announced the protest Saturday afternoon. The few people who responded appeared unclear on why the church was chosen as the protest venue.

1819 News attempted to contact church leadership about the protest, but we have yet to receive a response.
