A young man killed early Sunday during flash flooding in Cleburne County is being remembered as a hero.

Cohen Turner was in a vehicle with a friend after an overnight fishing trip on Lake Wedowee, when rising rain waters took over the SUV. As the driver attempted to cross a bridge on County Road 41, the SUV was pushed through the guardrail and down an embankment.

Turner’s uncle, Danny Turner, posted on social media about the incident, explaining how his nephew died a hero.

“Cohen and his friend were submerged into the creek where they exited out the sunroof into the water,” Turner stated. “His friend went under and his last actions were that of abandoning his own safety and pushing his friend to a tree for safety. A heroic act by everyone’s definition. Cohen was then swept under afterwards.”

The Turkey Heaven Volunteer Fire Department, along with several other agencies, worked for over two hours to assist multiple individuals who were attempting to cross flooded roadways.

“These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of just how powerful floodwaters can be,” said fire chief Patrick Nolen. “The safety of our community is our top priority, and while we’re grateful that we were able to safely rescue the individuals involved, we urge everyone to take flood warnings seriously. Never attempt to cross flooded roadways, as even small amounts of water can quickly turn dangerous.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family who tragically lost a loved one, and we will continue to work diligently to protect and serve our community in times of crisis,” he continued. “Thank you to each and every one who came out to assist as well as those who reached out willing to assist, that's what makes Cleburne County the best."
