A Florida man was arrested Wednesday with 81 gallons of moonshine, according to the Ozark Police Department.
Learndis Hamilton, 61, of Frostproof, Fla., was charged with transportation of prohibited liquors and beverages.
According to an arrest report, Officer Dylan Griffin pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation on January 9. The traffic stop occurred on Highway 231. Griffin, who serves on the Crime Suppression Unit, noticed multiple jugs of a clear liquid.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that the liquid was distilled moonshine. Due to the quantity in the vehicle, Griffin was taken into custody at 12:30 a.m. on January 10.
“Had it not been for the diligence and proactive enforcement on behalf of Officer Griffin, the prohibited liquor would likely have been sold with zero oversight or regulation, possibly leading to additional crimes,” stated Ozark Police Chief Michael Bryan.
The case was handed over to the Alabama Beverage Control Board and has been sent to the grand jury.
Hamilton is considered innocent until proven guilty.
