Businessman and entrepreneur Timothy Lower has announced he will run for the District 2 seat of the Foley City Council. His goals include improving "Main Street" Foley, exploring the establishment of a city school system and
Lower, who started several businesses, including Home Boss Inspection and Island Time Office Suites, is currently the Alabama broker for simpliHŌM.
Lower is the chairman of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and serves on the board of directors of the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. He is also involved with Foley Main Street.
For the past six years, Lower has served on the Baldwin County Republican Party's executive committee.
"I love the city of Foley," Lower said. "I think that it has huge potential and I would like to use my business skills and experiences to help see Foley grow and thrive."
Lower said he would like to focus on infrastructure, downtown improvements, public safety and the possibility of forming a Foley city school district.
"I think that right now we're managing mediocrity in our schools and we'll never get to greatness if we don't make some changes," he said.
Schools in Foley are part of the Baldwin County Public Schools system. While some have voiced interest in pulling away from the county and following suit of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich told 1819 News there are no plans to move forward with a city school system.
Lower said he believes the issue is one of the biggest challenges the city is currently facing. He also said public safety should be a priority.
"Public safety is something I take very seriously and it remains one of my top priorities as Foley continues to grow, particularly in areas like the Mills," Lower said. "I’m a strong advocate for proactive measures that keep our neighborhoods safe."
Lower's mother graduated from Foley High School before joining the U.S. Navy. Although Lower was born on the island of Guam, he never forgot his Alabama roots. He remembered visiting his grandfather, a local electrician who inspired him to become an entrepreneur. Those visits left a lasting impression on Lower and deepened his love for the community.
Lower moved his family to Foley 10 years ago.
"We were living up in Northern Virginia and didn't feel like it was a great place to raise our family, so we wanted to move somewhere that lined up with our values," Lower recalled. "Visiting here as a kid and having some family here helped make that move for us and out of everywhere I've lived, this feels like home."
Lower and his wife, Dina, have been married for 24 years and have two children.
