A wildfire in Shelby County has burned 2,500 acres, and the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) is urging Alabamians to refrain from burning.
Crews responded to the Pine Mountain Fire on Saturday. AFC fire analyst Ethan Barrett said his team made progress Tuesday as weather conditions improved. The fire is now 75% contained, and a burnout line is established. No structures are threatened.
“Leading up to this weekend, the Alabama Forestry Commission issued a fire danger advisory,” said Barrett. “And then on Saturday, we stopped issuing permits across the state. This was due to the critical fire weather that was forecasted leading up to this weekend and the current drought we’re experiencing.”
Barrett said even after forecasted rainfall this weekend, much of Alabama will remain in a drought.
