Former Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) commissioner Kent Davis is considering joining the multitude of candidates seeking elected office in 2026.
Davis was recently fired by Gov. Kay Ivey from his position with the ADVA. The State Board of Veterans Affairs rejected Ivey's request to terminate Davis in October. Ivey then unilaterally fired him after the one-and-a-half-hour SBVA meeting. Davis and his attorney have said he plans to file a lawsuit based on anti-retaliation provisions of the Alabama Ethics Act and contesting Ivey’s alleged “supreme executive power” to fire him.
Davis was also the subject of a recent op-ed by Troy Carico and Bryan Battaglia suggesting Davis consider a run for Governor.
Davis told 1819 News on Tuesday, “Governor is pretty high to start out a political career. I’ve gotten literally hundreds of messages from not only around the state but from around the nation.”
“It’s kind of gone viral, people asking me either, ‘Are you running for Governor?’ or ‘Are you interested in running for Governor?’ I say, “My gosh, this is all of a sudden, and it’s way preliminary. It’s very, very early in the next process. We just got over an election.’ What I’ve politely told people is I would consider running for political office. Let’s see what positions might be viable in a couple of years. I mean, we’re two years away from the next election. That’s how this all came about. It’s nothing I initiated. I promise you,” Davis said.
