He rose from a postmaster to the mayor's office.

He guided Decatur through the national recession of 2008.

Former Decatur Mayor Don Stanford died Friday at age 82.

Stanford’s one term of office hit at a difficult time. He served from 2008 to 2012, coinciding with the entirety of the national recession. Stanford had two goals as Mayor during the recession – don’t let people lose their jobs and don’t cut economic development. He mostly got both done.

Stanford worked 25 years as the postmaster in the nearby Morgan County cities of Danville and Trinity, retiring in 2004.

He was a graduate of Decatur High School and Athens State, earning a degree in Business Administration.

Services will be announced.
