Former 11th Judicial Circuit Judge Gil Self will file an appeal with a court-appointed attorney after his attorneys pulled out of the case.

Self was convicted on 17 counts of using his office for personal gain and was sentenced to 12 years behind bars.

Prosecutors said Self used Lauderdale County judicial funds to pay for multiple vacations, a couch for his home, his son’s college diploma frame, prescription eyeglasses, alcohol and tuition and fees for conferences he didn’t attend. He is accused of misusing more than $146,000 in public funds.

Now, Self said he doesn’t have enough money to pay his attorneys. A judge denied his motion to dismiss the case but granted motions to appoint a new attorney and provide him a free copy of the trial transcript. The court appointed attorney Charlie Bottoms to defend Self.
