Governor Kay Ivey appointed former Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson to the Alabama State Port Authority on Friday.

The board oversees the Port of Mobile, which connects the United States to the global supply chain. The port has invested over $1.4 billion to modernize and deepen its facilities, enabling larger cargo barges to connect to rail, truck, and air transport.

Stimpson stepped away as mayor earlier this year, announcing he would not seek re-election. During his 12 years as mayor, Stimpson worked with the Port of Mobile, recognizing its value to the state and assisting the Port with a widening and deepening project to attract larger vessels. Stimpson championed that expansion, saying it would directly benefit the city.

In addition to Stimpson, Ivey appointed Tony Cochran and Patricia Sims.
