Safety is a top concern for Mobilians, which is why former Mobile police detective Bill Appling is running for City Council District 4.

Appling announced his candidacy Tuesday, saying as a small business owner and community volunteer, he brings a unique perspective.

“With deep roots in Mobile and a long-standing record of public service, Bill brings a unique blend of entrepreneurial spirit, civic leadership, and a passion for preserving Mobile’s character while pushing it forward,” the campaign stated. “He launched his first business downtown in his early twenties, served the City of Mobile Police Department for over a decade, and has since dedicated his life to revitalizing neighborhoods, mentoring, and supporting families of fallen first responders.”

The District 4 seat is currently occupied by Ben Reynolds. Municipal elections will be on August 26.

“I’m running to make sure our neighborhoods are safe, our growth is smart, and our residents’ voices are truly heard,” Appling said. “District 4 deserves a leader who listens, who’s walked in our shoes, and who shows up when it matters.”

Appling will focus on public safety, responsible development, cleanup and beautification and community engagement. He is running on transparency and accessibility.

During his time as a Mobile police officer, he served on the Honor Guard, where he played "Taps" at memorial services and funerals.

Appling has served on the boards for the Downtown Mobile Alliance and the Downtown Mobile District Management Corporation. He founded Alabama Hues and co-founded Family of the Fallen. He is also involved with the Love All Pantry in Midtown Mobile.
