Former State Auditor Jim Zeigler qualified with the Alabama Republican Party on Friday to run for the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC), Place 2.

The PSC is responsible for regulating the state's utility companies.

Zeigler is facing incumbent Chris Beeker III, who was appointed to the commission by Gov. Ivey last year, taking the seat long occupied by his father, Chip Beeker. Other Republican candidates who have qualified for the seat include Brent Woodall and Priscilla Andrews.

"I am running to put the public back into the public service commission. I will be the Watchman for the people," Zeigler said in a statement to 1819 News on Friday. "The PSC is important, but they do not do a good job of letting the people know the issues they address."

Zeigler served one term on the PSC, starting in 1974 at the age of 24, but did not seek re-election. He was elected twice as State Auditor and served from 2015 to 2023. He was term-limited from seeking re-election.

Zeigler's wife, Jackie, is the elected State Board of Education member for eight South Alabama counties.

Zeigler said he will release a major statement with his platform next week. The primary in Alabama is May 19.
