Former State Senator and well-known Anniston attorney Doug Ghee (D-Anniston) was indicted on a first-degree sexual assault charge after a female inmate accused him of sexual assault, battery and false imprisonment.
According to documents, the incident happened at the Calhoun County Jail. A 29-year-old woman facing charges of obstruction of justice in Calhoun County and drug-related charges in St. Clair County was shackled and handcuffed for a client-attorney meeting with Ghee.
The inmate said Ghee told her he could get her a good deal if she paid him $2,500 and agreed to be his sex slave. She said he told her he had longstanding relationships with local judges and could pull some strings.
During a second visit, the inmate claims she got up to leave the interview room, and the attorney kissed her, put his hands on her throat and touched her breast.
Investigators stated that surveillance cameras were present in the room where the incidents occurred. Those were analyzed as part of the investigation.
Ghee turned himself into the Calhoun County Jail on Thursday and was given a $5,000 bond. He maintains his innocence and has vowed to fight the charge.
Ghee served as a state senator from 1990 to 1998. His daughter, Wendy Ghee Draper, ran as a Republican for Senate District 12 in 2022. She was challenged due to her father's time as a Democratic senator and past donations to Democrats.
Wendy Ghee Draper’s husband, Jack Draper, resigned his position as mayor of Anniston in May.
