A group of former Walker County jailers formally pleaded guilty in the case of an inmate who died while in custody in 2023.
Braxton Kee, Heather Craig and Karen Kelly pleaded guilty on Friday to deprivation of rights in the death of Anthony “Tony” Mitchell.
Court documents state Mitchell had been in jail for two weeks after shooting at a deputy. The plea agreement states that he was barely responding to officers in the jail who found him wet, cold and covered in feces on the floor.
Mitchell died from hypothermia and sepsis and the manner of death was determined to be homicide by “medical neglect.”
A total of 24 people have been charged in connection to Mitchell’s death, including jailers and jail nurses.
