Officials at Fort Rucker have already started the process of changing the post's name from "Fort Novosel" to Fort Rucker.
President Donald Trump announced the change last week, along with a list of other name changes to military installations across the United States.
Fort Rucker was previously named after Confederate soldier Edmunch Rucker. The Biden administration changed the name to Fort Novosel after World War II and Vietnam veteran chief warrant officer Michael Novosel.
However, now Fort Rucker will be named after World War I hero Capt. Edward W. Rucker.
An official at Fort Novosel told 1819 News they could not bring the original namesake back due to a 2021 law prohibiting Department of Defense assets from being named in honor of Confederate soldiers.
The renaming ceremony is being planned and is expected to be held within the next six to 10 weeks. The ceremony will be more low-key than the 2021 name-changing ceremony, officials said. Federal funding must be allocated for the complete name change, but the name has already been changed at some locations on base.
