Former Montgomery City Councilwoman Marche Johnson made her first statement on Friday after being removed from the council for not residing in her district.
The Montgomery City Council voted Tuesday unanimously to vacate Johnson from her District 3 seat.
The council also approved a resolution establishing dates for a special election to fill the vacancy.
1819 News reported recently that Johnson lives in a home in City Council District 7, not District 3, which she has represented since 2021.
Johnson purchased the home in June 2024 for $359,900 with a VA loan. She also has a property tax exemption listed on the home, which would indicate the home is her primary residence.
By law, members of the Montgomery City Council must live in the district they represent.
Johnson said in a statement on Friday, "Today marks the close of one chapter of my public service, but it does not mark the end of my commitment to the people of Montgomery."
"When questions arose regarding my residency, I fully cooperated throughout the process and have acted in good faith. After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to allow the facts and the law to speak for themselves regarding the Council's decision to declare the District 3 seat vacant," she added. "While this chapter has come to a close, my dedication to Montgomery remains unchanged."
Candidate qualifying for the special election will begin June 30 and remain open through July 14.
The special election for the District 3 seat will be held on September 1. If no candidate receives the required number of votes, a runoff election will be held on October 13.
