Gadsden Regional Medical Center confirmed there were no suspected cases of Ebola or viral hemorrhagic fever Saturday after a social media post caused panic.
The emergency room was placed on diversion and the hospital contacted the Alabama Department of Health and the CDC after a patient arrived for treatment. The hospital could not reveal patient information but released the following statement:
Gadsden Regional Medical Center is releasing this statement based on questions from the community about a patient treated at our hospital today. While we cannot disclose private patient information, we can share that we worked in close collaboration with the Alabama Department of Health and CDC regarding a patient who presented to our emergency room. We can confirm this evening that there are currently no confirmed or suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever within our hospital, community or the surrounding region.
While the hospital’s emergency room was placed on diversion for ambulances earlier, it remained open for patients throughout the day and is fully open now, including for ambulance transport.
We’d like to express our great appreciation to our physicians, nurses, and clinical and support teams who managed today’s events with expertise and professionalism.
We’re proud to serve our community and to provide help for patients whenever we are needed.
The CDC is responding to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. There are no confirmed cases in the U.S.
