Prattville Pride, the LGBTQ+ advocacy organization that has thrust itself into the national spotlight on more than one occasion, is now trying to raise last-minute funds for its upcoming “Pride Fest," citing financial woes with securing a venue.
Prattville Pride launched its first official event at Cooter’s Pond in June last year. The event received support from other groups both in and out of state, likely due to the group thrusting itself in the middle of controversy surrounding sexually explicit books in the public library.
However, this year, the group is now asking for the public’s help in funding its planned event on the first of next month.
Prattville Pride started a GoFundMe page, asking for $2,500 to cover event costs, citing the need to pay for a private venue.
“This year, we encountered major challenges when the City of Prattville failed to provide their new 'Green Space Rental Agreement,' which prevented us from using the public venue we had planned for,” the GoFundMe description reads. “As a result, we were forced to rent a private venue at the last minute—an unexpected $2,500 cost. While we’re proud to share that our 501(c)(3) status has finally been approved, it didn’t happen in time to qualify for critical grant funding for this year’s event. With only two weeks left, we still need to raise an additional $2,500 to ensure our event is safe, successful, and joyful for the community we serve. We’re doing everything we can—**car washes, yard sales, and relentless grassroots hustle**—but we can’t do it alone."
The GoFundMe was started a week ago and has since gained just over $400 in donations.
Prattville Pride has butted heads with Prattville leadership before. Most recently, the group filed suit against the city after it attempted to prevent the group from having a float in the local Christmas parade
