As part of a $3 billion investment to expand its nationwide manufacturing capabilities, Louisville, Ky.-based GE Appliances recently allocated $28 million to its Decatur refrigeration plant for equipment upgrades and a new on-site primary care clinic for employees and their families.
"Investing in advanced manufacturing and employee health is a winning combination that strengthens our business," stated Rocki Rockingham, chief human resources officer at GE Appliances. "How we show up matters. At GE Appliances, we are creating appliances our consumers love in an environment where our employees can do their best work and build lasting careers."
GE Appliances said the technology upgrades at the Decatur plant include "highly automated" thermoforming machines. Other upgrades include new lighting and 21 commercial air-conditioning units to improve working conditions for employees.
As a celebration of the progress, government officials and community leaders attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday at the clinic's plant and also saw the multi-million-dollar tech upgrades firsthand.
GE Appliances’ Decatur plant is the highest-volume refrigeration plant in the country and nationally recognized for manufacturing excellence. Additionally, the corporation said it contributes over $2.1 billion annually to Alabama’s Gross Domestic Product and directly employs 1,600 people in the state.
