State Rep. Ernie Yarbrough (R-Trinity) intends to bring back his bill to prohibit education payroll deductions for teachers' unions in Alabama and to allow all dues-paying members to leave their public sector union whenever they choose.

The bill, House Bill 666 (HB666), was filed at the end of last year's session as a way to get the conversation rolling; a conversation that Yarbrough believes has been fruitful. "I'm absolutely going to bring it back; this is a fight that has to be fought and has to be won," Yarbrough said.

"The NEA, if you watch their national events, they do everything but sacrifice a goat on live television," Yarbrough told guest host Apryl Marie Fogel during an in-studio recording of Talk 99.5 FM's "Leland Live," elaborating that "it's just, they're just godless and wicked."

Yarbrough's comments come just days after the NEA lamented the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to protect girls' sports.

The group has resources available to teachers to bring LGBTQ+ classroom materials to students as young as fifth grade.

They have joined protests and posted about defunding ICE. They have joined protests and supported No Kings protests.

"Why are we collecting union [dues] for them?" Yarbrough asked.

The second parameter of the bill would allow anyone in a public union to leave at any time, rather than only during the current opt-in period.

Currently, dues for multiple teachers' unions, including AEA and the Alabama Federation of Teachers, are processed by the local school system before the system gives the money to the teachers' association.
