An illegal alien from Guatemala has been charged with multiple offenses after recently leading DeKalb County deputies on a high-speed police chase near Kilpatrick.

The pursuit occurred on May 20 after Christian Perez-Lopez, 24, of Albertville, was observed by law enforcement attempting to avoid a checkpoint. Authorities made contact with him and saw alcohol as well as drug paraphernalia in plain view. While deputies were attempting to remove him from the vehicle, Perez-Lopez drove off, initiating a chase.

"The pursuit went down County Road 179 at a high rate of speed, and Perez-Lopez crossed Highway 68 without stopping at the stop sign, went through the parking lot at the Marathon Gas Station, and continued onto HWY 168," the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office said in a statement posted to social media. "Perez-Lopez passed several vehicles on HWY 168 and attempted to turn right onto County Road 479, where he lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole. Perez-Lopez exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended after actively resisting arrest."

The DeKalb County Drugs and Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene, and a vehicle search was conducted, after which Perez-Lopez was arrested and charged with Felony Attempt to Elude, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Criminal Mischief 3rd.

Perez-Lopez will be transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody following his release from the DeKalb County Detention Center.
