MONTGOMERY — The Senate County and Municipal Government committee passed legislation renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Wednesday.

House Bill 247 (HB247) by State Rep. David Standridge (R-Hayden) would officially rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America and require all state and local entities and their employees to observe and implement the name change, where practicable.

The bill failed to pass the Senate committee on Tuesday but passed on a second try on Wednesday.

“I voted against this yesterday. Did not know this was going to end up in a tie vote. I took a little bit of issue with the fiscal note on this bill. I appreciate the president’s America First platform and recognize and respect his executive order renaming the gulf some time ago,” State Sen. Jay Hovey (R-Auburn) said in committee. “I have been assured after the fact that it would affect our coffers minimally, and so I do have the opportunity to change my vote, and I’d like to call for that vote.”

The bill has already passed the House and now heads to the Senate for their consideration.
