Gulf Shores Fire Rescue assisted the Gulf Shores Police Department in removing a 12-foot alligator that killed a dog.
The alligator was taken from the 800 block of West Canal, a residential area. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) also responded and the alligator was euthanized.
The alligator weighed an estimated 640 pounds.
The police department has a marine unit to respond to these types of calls, and firefighters helped lift the massive animal. One officer took a photo of the gator's foot beside his own to show the size comparison.
WKRG reported the alligator killed a five-year-old black lab named Vada last week.
The ADCNR said alligators in Alabama are most commonly spotted in Coastal Plain lakes, rivers and associated habitats and usually in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Alligators are typically absent above the Alabama Fall Line, except for an introduced Tennessee River population near Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge.
Due to conservation efforts, the alligator population in Alabama has rebounded since the 1960s.
