More law enforcement will be on Alabama's Gulf Coast this summer. The City of Gulf Shores added a new Marine Unit to patrol local waterways.

The newly established unit will work to ensure safety and will provide emergency services and boater assistance. The unit will patrol the Gulf of America, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Bon Secour River.

The unit is starting with two officers but will soon expand to four. Officer Ian Wallace, hired from the Denver Police Department, and Officer Tim Jones, hired from the Montgomery Police Department, are the two officers on duty.

“Their dedication and expertise are invaluable as they work to keep our waterways safe while providing critical assistance when needed whether it's rescuing a pelican or responding to a boater in distress call,” Gulf Shores PD stated.
