Gulf Shores Police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection to the March 27 shooting near the intersection of Highway 59 and East Beach Boulevard. After the shooting, they said the suspect attempted to get into cars passing by to flee. Detectives are asking those victims to come forward.
UPDATE: Police identified the person who they believe attempted to flee in vehicles passing by. Jaytwon Williams, 18, of Bay Minette, is charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. They now say he has not been charged with the shooting.
The shooting happened around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday in the busy part of town near The Hangout, Gulf Place and Alvin’s Island. Spring Breakers scrambled for safety when gunfire erupted.
Investigators said one juvenile victim who was shot in the leg has been released from the hospital. Police said the victim and the suspect knew each other.
The names of the other suspects are being withheld, pending additional charges, police said. More arrests are possible. Detectives are also reviewing surveillance video and cell phone video that was taken at the scene.
Molly Haffner, who was visiting from Illinois, was one passerby who captured the frantic scene following the shooting.
"People were running into the street. It was really frantic," Haffner told 1819 News.
The shooting happened one year to the day of a shooting in front of Gulf Place that left one injured in 2023.
