The Gulf Shores City Council will consider a resolution banning alcohol on beaches for the Spring Break period.

The City has banned alcohol during Spring Break since 2016 to ensure the "health, safety and welfare of visitors and residents."

The proposed dates for the ban are March 1 through April 28.

The resolution to be considered reads, "[I]t shall be unlawful for any person to possess or consume any alcoholic beverage on the sand of any portion of the beach project area lying east of the eastern boundary of the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge, west of the western boundary of Gulf State Park, and seaward of the line of sand stabilization fencing installed by the City as part of the beach projects established on the Gulf front beaches within the corporate limits of the City of Gulf Shores."

City officials said the ban has helped reduce dangerous actions, such as binge drinking, underage drinking and unruly crowds.

"It really worked well in years past, and it's something that I would anticipate we would continue to do as long as Spring Break continues to bring so many people to town," said Mayor Robert Craft.

The council will also vote on a measure allowing Craft to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office to add extra patrols to the area. Gulf Shores Police chief deputy Joe Traylor said the extra assistant is needed during Spring Break and other activities throughout the year.

The Gulf Shores City Council will meet at 4 p.m. on Monday.
