In a recent podcast interview, Guntersville mayoral hopeful Jeff McLaughlin denied ever donating to Hillary Clinton. However, campaign finance records tell a different story.

"No, I didn't ever donate any money to Hillary," McLaughlin said in the latest episode of "Voice of the Ville."

According to campaign finance records on the Federal Election Commission's website, McLaugling donated $1,200 in October 2016 to Hillary for America, a principal campaign committee for Clinton's presidential campaign. Records also show a $1,000 donation to Doug Jones' Senate campaign committee in 2017 and 2020, as well as a $500 donation to Joe Biden's campaign in 2020.

McLaughlin admitted in the podcast episode to donating to Jones.

"His slogan was 'United Alabama.' [Jones] tried to do that, and I think you got to give him credit for that," McLaughlin said. "I think he did a good job, but I think the Democratic label just pulls him down. I don't agree with Doug on everything. I'm a lot more conservative than Doug Jones."

McLaughlin described himself as a "conservative southern Democrat" and "a man for the people." While municipal elections are nonpartisan, McLaughlin's legislative record as a Democrat in the State House from 2001 to 2010 has raised concerns among many voters.

"I'm not running as a Republican. I'm not running as a Democrat. I'm running not with a D, not with an R, but with a G. The G is for Guntersville," he said on the podcast. "… I'm not going to be calling Nancy Pelosi for opinions, and I'm not going to be calling Donald Trump."

Polls open at 7 a.m. for the Guntersville mayoral runoff election between McLaughlin and incumbent Leigh Dollar. The two received an even number of votes in the August general election.
