Hanceville Mayor Paul Campbell announced his resignation on Tuesday morning.

In a letter posted to Facebook, Campbell said his wife's recent death and an increase in job-related stress contributed to the decision.

"I knew the work would take time and demand much of me, and I believed I was prepared for that responsibility," wrote Campbell. "As many of you know, my wife, Kyla, passed away suddenly in April. Her death was a profound shock and a devastating loss. At the time, I believed that staying busy and serving our community would help me process my grief. However, I have come to realize that this belief was mistaken."

"The unique and demanding circumstances facing our city have created a level of stress far greater than I anticipated, and that stress has made navigating my grief increasingly difficult," he added.

Campbell was elected in the wake of a scandal that saw a grand jury indict Hanceville's former police chief and four officers for crimes including evidence mishandling, drug-related offenses, and computer tampering. During his campaign, Campbell pushed to repair the public's trust and his police department's public image.

Campbell's resignation is effective immediately.
