The Harpersville Police Department used the Matthew McConaughey visit to Alabama as an opportunity for some comic relief on Monday.

The department posted on Facebook that the actor's short visit to film "The Rivals of Amziah King" was no excuse for speeding.

"We are aware that Matthew McConaughey is in the Birmingham metro area filming a movie," the department posted. "We have discussed it, and while we are empathetic to the plight of you wanting to meet him before he leaves, Harpersville Police officers are NOT taking his short presence in Alabama as an excuse for speeding. It was a tough call, but …the law being the law and all…..We wish you happy and safe @officiallymcconaughey stalking."

The McConaughey craze has hit the Birmingham metro, and sightings of the actor have been shared online. When he stopped in at J&J Grocery in McCalla, people lined up to catch a glimpse of the "Dazed and Confused" actor.

The movie's filming is set to continue in Alabama for six more weeks.

McConaughey has previously filmed in Alabama for the movie "Failure to Launch." Part of that movie was filmed in Cherokee and Etowah Counties back in 2006.
