Members of the Hayneville Town Council voted to disband the police department at a special-called meeting on Wednesday.

According to The Lowndes Signal, council members made the decision after more than an hour of deliberation in executive session.

Hayneville Mayor Jimmie Davis told the outlet the action is a "temporary measure set in motion to give town leaders time to sort out internal issues plaguing the department."

"The [department] will be disbanded until Oct. 15," Davis said. "[Officers] will be on administrative leave and will be paid until that day."

The Lowndes County Sheriff's Department will respond to calls in the town while the police department is disbanded.

Davis told The Lowndes Signal he recommended terminating Police Chief Kelvin Mitchell due to claims made by Investigator Deardre Pinkett alleging improper conduct.
