Alabama's federal delegation joined dozens of their colleagues in expressing sadness at the sudden passing of U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Saturday night.

Graham, 71, died suddenly on Saturday evening after an unexpected medical event. The preliminary medical examiner's report states he likely died due to the rupture of his aorta.

A staunch ally of President Donald Trump, Graham called the president the night of his death after he concluded a trip to Ukraine. Trump, who called Graham "a truly great man," ordered that all flags in the nation be flown at half-mast until the following Saturday.

Messages of condolence and grief began flooding social media from members of Congress, who shared memories of their time working with the veteran, who served for over 30 years in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) said Graham "loved his country" and remembered him as a fighter and friend.

"Sad to hear about the passing of my colleague Lindsey," Tuberville wrote on social media. "He loved this country and fought hard for what he believed in. Praying for his family and friends during this difficult time."

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) shared a very lengthy message on X, expressing sympathies from herself and her husband. She also shared a picture of Britt and Graham with a short message expressing that he was "already missed."

"Wesley and I are shocked and deeply saddened. Lindsey was a true and dear friend, a great leader, and a fierce advocate for the people of South Carolina. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know him, learn from him, and serve alongside him. He not only graciously welcomed me to the Senate and gave me a seat at the table, but he also took time with my family in a meaningful and impactful way."

"Whether he was addressing an issue facing South Carolina or standing up for America's interests on the world stage, he had vision and purpose, and he used both to tackle challenges others thought impossible. He possessed a rare combination of brilliance, acumen, and wit that brought levity to some of the most difficult moments, always allowing for a brief reprieve before refocusing on what lay ahead. This is a tremendous loss for our nation, and we're praying for his sister, family, friends, loved ones, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence in the Senate cannot be replaced. He will be immensely missed."

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) also joined the chorus expressing condolences for Graham's passing, calling him "iconic."

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) called the loss "heartbreaking," calling Graham a "true patriot."

The messages crossed party lines, drawing condolences from U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham).
