U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) recently came out against President Donald Trump for declining to sign a comprehensive housing legislation that put U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) on opposite sides of the voting roll.
The bipartisan effort known as the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act is led by U.S. Sens. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), along with U.S. Reps. French Hill (R-Ark.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) in the U.S. House.
Despite receiving wide bipartisan support, Tuberville joined U.S. Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) in voting against the bill.
The bill was approved by both bodies this week and was expected to receive Trump’s signature on Friday. However, Trump called off the bill signing at the last minute.
On social media, Trump said he would sign the housing measure into law only if Congress approved the SAVE America Act, an administration priority that would impose voter ID requirements and limit mail-in ballots.
Sewell responded on social media, accusing the president of trying ot use the housing measure as leverage to rig the upcoming election.
“I’m angry,” Sewell said. “I’m angry because earlier this week, the House and the Senate passed the most significant housing bill in decades, and Donald Trump; he blew it.”
Sewell joined the other supporters in claiming it would allow more housing affordability. She also called the Save Act “voter suppression.”
“He would rather make it harder for you to vote than easier for you to live,” she continued. “Trump isn’t interested in making life more affordable. He’s focusing on rigging this year’s election to help Republicans stay in power.”
