U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. cut another grant to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Tuskegee University on Tuesday.
The Trump administration canceled a $3,481,168 federal grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to UAB and Tuskegee University for "Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (UAB/TU FIRST) Partnership."
According to HHS, the canceled UAB and Tuskegee grant and others are listed online in accordance with the Trump memo "Radical Transparency About Wasteful Spending."
According to a description of the NIH-funded program, "The UAB/Tuskegee Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation, or FIRST, Partnership is designed to create systemic and sustainable cultural change at both institutions and foster inclusive excellence in research."
"New early-career faculty will be hired in areas of research strength and opportunity across both institutions, including cancer, obesity and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and neuroscience, with an emphasis on health disparities and health equity research," a UAB spokesperson wrote in a blog post in 2022.
Another description of the program states, "Both institutions are committed to building a self-reinforcing community of scientists committed to inclusive excellence. Diverse faculty will be hired in clusters of 3-4 annually. The cluster hiring approach hiring fosters the formation of faculty peer groups who receive both individual and group-based institutional support including mentoring, career advocacy, and guidance within the campus research enterprise."
"Through this joint program, UAB and TU will recruit a diverse cohort of 12 early-career faculty into tenure-track research faculty positions, with primary appointments at either UAB or TU and joint appointments at both institutions. In particular, UAB and TU are seeking candidates: a) who have a strong health disparities focus to their research, b) who are responsive to needs/opportunities and program requirements, c) who are well-qualified, d) who have a strong record of promoting diversity and inclusive excellence, and e) whose research interests align with the proposed research areas," according to the description.
